CSER’s academic programme manager SJ Beard gave oral evidence to an inquiry session on technological risk. SJ's evidence describes the current UK risk assessment and risk planning process and its suitability for assessing technological risks. Key difficulties are the short time horizon and threat focus of the UK's National Security Risk Assessment, and the fact that it remains a classified process with limited opportunities for external input and peer review. SJ also argued for a greater use of foresight and horizon scanning within UK risk assessment and the need to understand technological risk from a social and cultural context.
