Mami Mizutori joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan in 1983, where she worked for twenty-seven years, serving among other positions as Director of the United Nations Policy Division, the National Security Policy Division and the Status of US Forces Agreement Division, and Director of the Japan Information and Culture Centre at the Japanese Embassy in London.
She was the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction from March 2018 until December 2023. Prior to this, from 2011, she was the Executive Director of the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures at the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom.
Mami graduated from Hitotsubashi University, Japan reading law and earned a diploma in International Studies from the Diplomatic School of Spain.
